Symptoms

There are ways to tell if you are currently sick, and depending on the severity of your symptoms you may want to see a doctor. You also may want to consider staying home if you are not feeling well.
Symptoms of the common cold:  

  • Nasal congestion 
    • caused by a build up of mucus  or phlegm
  • Nasal pain or irritation 
  • Sneezing 
  • A runny nose
    • nasal discharge
      • usually clear and runny at first, but then becomes thicker and darker as the infection worsens 
  • Coughing 
    • this symptom only occurs in one out of every three cases 
  • Hoarse voice
  • General sense of feeling unwell 

Less common symptoms of the cold: 

  • mild fever 
  • headache
  • earache
    • a severe earache may be a sign of a middle ear infection (otitis media) 
  • muscle pain 
  • loss of taste and smell 
  • mild irritation of your eyes
  • a feeling of pressure in your ears and face
